CALA’s 2017 Day in Your District

What is in the secret recipe that makes a community? Residents, staff, and the relationships between them? The community’s connections with others in the area? A culture of individual attention, innovative care, inclusive environments? Last week, 61 legislative district offices got to find out during the eighth annual Day in Your District. They met with more than 100 CALA members to learn about the benefits of Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities, and the ways in which they enrich their residents’ lives and the community-at-large.

From left: Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) meets with Dawn DeStefani, executive director of ActivCare at Mission Bay.

One attendee described their discussion: “We laughed a lot, with great questions from them, and great answers from our team to their questions.” Another mentioned, “Overall the visit was rated above average—I might even say outstanding. I believe this was the best day in the district yet for me personally and professionally.”

Mary Jane Rodriguez, exeuctive director for Belmont Village Burbank (right) enjoyed meeting with Victoria Dochoghlian, field representative for Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale).

District representatives and legislators were grateful that CALA members took the time to visit. In a Facebook post, a CALA member said “We appreciate the warm welcome that we received and look forward to working with our local representatives about senior living and care.” Another enthusiastic member shared, “WHY ISNT EVERYONE GOING TO THIS??!!”

Nick Calero (center left), district director for Senator Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga) meets with Veronica Ramos (far left), Lyn Lenderman (center right) and Kevin Thomas (far right), all with Linda Valley Senior Living.

Legislators, staffers, and CALA members alike were thankful for the experience. A CALA-member attendee put it best: “Thank you so much for coordinating this Day In Your District event. It was a pleasure to build on this relationship!”

Now it’s our turn to say “thanks!” Thank you to all the participants who made this a successful Day in Your District! CALA members: if you’d like to help build relationships with legislators, invite your legislator to visit your community.
