Last week, CALA awarded one of our provider members the inaugural Elevate Award. The Elevate Award recognizes assisted living providers who create and implement programs that elevate residents’ and staff members’ quality of life and engage the community.

Aegis Living: the Aegis Crisis File Program

3Aegis Living is receiving this award for their innovative crisis planning program known as the Aegis Crisis File Program. The goal of the program is to offer education and support for families before a crisis happens. The program also provides a template for having crucial conversations to ensure loved ones’ concerns and preferences are addressed.

Family members visiting an Aegis community receive a red folder that includes a checklist and forms needed to move a family member into the assisted living or memory care community of their choice. Staff members at each Aegis location offer their assistance in filling out forms, compiling critical information, and educating family members to ensure they understand what is required in the event of a placement. All this is offered free of charge. To date, the Crisis File Program has been rolled out in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Sacramento areas.

The Crisis File in Action

A gentleman stopped by an Aegis community recently. His wife had dementia and he was doing his best to care for her, but he wanted to learn more about the services they offered. The marketing director assisted him in filling out a Crisis Folder. Two days later, the marketing director’s cell phone rang at 5:00 AM. In a state of panic, the same gentleman shared that his wife had walked out of their home that morning, determined to return to her native Norway. The marketing director walked him through the next steps to ensure his wife would join him in the car, and from there he drove directly to the community. By the time they arrived, staff was at the ready to facilitate a same-day move-in, their copy of the Crisis Folder in hand. With the Crisis File Program, the outcome was far less stressful for the resident and her husband.

Congratulations to Aegis Living, recipient of the 2016 Elevate Award! Your dedication to engaging the community-at-large in preparing for care improves the lives of California’s Assisted Living residents.
