Advocacy—like Assisted Living—requires both an energetic nature and a strong sense of purpose. As members gathered together last week at CALA’s 2016 Assisted Living Advocacy Day, the room was filled with the same purposeful and energized nature that our members bring to service and care they provide for residents each day.
Heather Harrison, CALA’s Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Public Affairs, and Erin Levi, CALA’s lobbyist, briefed attendees on pending legislation with CALA members and helped them prepare for discussions.
Close to 150 CALA members then brought their energy and dedication to the State Capitol to share with close to 90 legislative offices, informing lawmakers about the real concerns and needs of providers and residents.
That afternoon, we honored two CALA members as 2015 Advocates of the Year. By participating in CALA’s advocacy efforts, hosting events at their communities, and building strong relationships with legislators and staffers, Monique Dixon and Cathy Katz successfully shared the true story of Assisted Living with their legislative offices and the general public during the past year.
We also honored Assemblymember Ian Calderon as CALA’s Legislator of the Year. Assemblymember Calderon worked tirelessly to help reinstate annual licensing inspections, which has been a top priority of CALA for many years.
The event was capped by a presentation from Lora Connolly, Director of the California Department of Aging. She discussed the future of care and housing for elders, the move toward managed care, continued development of person-centered care, and what Assisted Living can bring to the table.
Thank you to all the attendees who made this Assisted Living Advocacy Day a successful one. Your personal commitment to Assisted Living shone through!
