What images first come to mind when you think of the month of September? Backpacks and busses? Students and schoolbooks? In the midst of all the back-to-school excitement, seniors (as in age, not high school) are probably the last thing on your mind. But, in fact, September is an important month to help raise awareness of our older adults and celebrate the positive aspects of aging. Here are some upcoming special events that you can participate in this month:
Assisted Living Week
September 13-19, 2015
During Assisted Living Week, providers throughout the country honor their communities and partners in care. This special week kicks off each year with the observance of Grandparents Day, a fitting way to start as many residents are grandparents and great-grandparents. This year, as CALA celebrates our 20th Anniversary, we have been looking back on some of the highlights of our past and celebrating providers that make us “Stronger by the Member”. For Assisted Living Week, we’re encouraging our members to do the same with residents and community members. We can’t wait to see what they have in store!
Walk to End Alzheimer’s
Various dates
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. CALA staff has participated in the past, and many CALA members make their local Walk a yearly tradition. This year, there are 35 walks happening in California cities throughout the months of September, October, and November. Visit the Walk to End Alzheimer’s webpage to find a walk near your home and learn how to participate or support the walkers.
Falls Prevention Awareness Day
September 23, 2015
September 23 is the Equinox marking the beginning of Fall. Fittingly, it has also been designated National Falls Prevention Awareness Day by the National Council on Aging. This year’s theme, Take a Stand to Prevent Falls, highlights the importance of a physical activity regimen with balance, strength training, and flexibility—something that many CALA-member communities include in their activities calendars. Learn how to get in on the action at the Falls Prevention Awareness Day website.
Active Aging Week
September 27-October 3, 2015
Active Aging Week, coordinated by the International Council on Active Aging, is a week-long observance promoting the benefits of leading an active, healthier lifestyle and highlighting the ability of older adults to live well, regardless of age or health conditions. Assisted Living providers know that exercise and healthy activities provided in their communities can contribute to a higher level of engagement and quality of life. Visit the Active Aging Week website for ideas on how to get yourself and your residents moving.
