As Assisted Living Week fast approaches, we’ve been encouraging CALA members to plan special events that connect with their community-at-large. But Assisted Living communities don’t wait for Assisted Living Week to do so, as Oak Tree Villa, a Brookdale Senior Living community, proved last week.
According to an article in the Press-Banner, residents hosted a rummage sale and donated the proceeds, over $1000, to the families of two Santa Cruz police officers who were killed while on duty.
The article continues:
They chose to donate to the families of the officers because they were killed in duty around the same time planning for the rummage sale began, said Oak Tree Villa Executive Director Tracy Freudendahl.
To accept the donation, Santa Cruz Police Officers, including Chief Kevin Vogel came to Oak Tree Villa in their 1961 Chevrolet Biscane (sic) cruiser and gave rides to some of the residents.
“It was very cool,” said Freudendahl. “The residents enjoyed it.”
And the residents of Oak Tree Villa aren’t done yet! According to the article, they held another rummage sale this past weekend; proceeds are going to the Alzheimer’s Association. Congratulations to the residents and staff of Oak Tree Villa on your successful fundraising events! We know that the Santa Cruz area will continue to benefit from your kind hearts and hard work.
