Members and potential members look to the CALA Board of Directors for representation and leadership. To have a better vision of all that these Assisted Living leaders do for their companies and CALA members, we asked them a series of questions. Their answers illuminate their ideas on work, community, and caring for seniors, and show the breadth and variety of companies represented on the CALA Board of Directors. To celebrate these thoughtful, dedicated people working on our members’ behalf, we will feature weekly interviews with each board member, available here and on the CALA Board of Directors webpage.
Jeff Slichta is Senior Vice President of Operations for Sunrise Senior Living‘s Western Division, a national company which has 41 communities throughout the state of California.
1. Why do you work in Assisted Living?
My primary motivation for working in senior housing is because of the amazing caliber and quality of people that are attached to this industry – servant hearts with heads for the business. Our mission, “to champion the quality of life for all seniors,” is also a big reason why I am in this business. Together as an industry, we can improve the quality of living for all seniors when we come together, understand their needs, and deliver on the promises we make.
2. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt, and why?
I have had several opportunities presented to me over the years, but at the end of the day, I always come to the same conclusion: this is where I belong, and this is what is most satisfying to me.
3. What are the most important things we should know about your company?
Sunrise Senior Living has been in business for more than 30 years and has played a significant role in training a large percentage of those in leadership positions in the industry. I am also now benefiting from this experience. I cannot say enough about the fact that Sunrise as an organization continues to place their resources at the community level where our residents receive the biggest benefit. That is something I am particularly proud of.
4. How would you describe your experience on the CALA board?
It has been a rich and fulfilling experience to serve on the CALA Board. The wealth of knowledge that the members of the board have and willingly share for the benefit of all is particularly noteworthy. I appreciate being on the cutting edge of what is happening, from both a regulatory and legislative perspective. Sally Michael and her team are some of the most professional, competent, and action-oriented leaders I have come across. They are outstanding advocates for the providers in this industry and have made significant contributions in that vein.
5. How would your colleagues describe you in three words?
Hard-working, relentless, and very happy.
6. What advice was given to you that you feel elevated your performance in life?
Always follow the mantra, “May I give you some feedback?”
7. What do you enjoy doing in your downtime?
Spending time with my four amazing children.
