Unleash the Power of Age During Older Americans Month

Every year since 1963, May has been the month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions and achievements. It is a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to honor the value that elders continue to contribute to our communities.

Older Americans Month 2013, Administration on AgingThis year’s Older Americans Month theme—“Unleash the Power of Age!”—emphasizes the important role of older adults. This May, communities across the nation will recognize older Americans as productive, active, and influential members of society.

Older Americans Month celebrations will acknowledge the value that older adults continue to bring to our communities by making an effort to applaud recent achievements of local elders and inviting them to share the activities they do to unleash the power of age.

While California’s Assisted Living communities provide services, support, and resources to older adults year-round, Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to show special appreciation! Here are some activity and event ideas from the Older Americans Month website to inspire your own special celebrations this month:

Older Americans Month 2013 VolunteeringVolunteer Activities

Volunteering is a fun, relaxing, and energizing way to unleash the power of age. Whether reading to children or collecting food for the homeless, volunteering is a wonderful way for older adults to stay active and meet a diverse range of people. Consider arranging a service activity or other volunteer event in your community to help bring older Americans together for a cause.

Making music together is a wonderful way to unleash the power of age. Invite people to form a singing group, or gather a few simple instruments for participants to play, such as drums, tambourines, and shakers. Find sheet music and ask a couple of skilled musicians to lead the group and invite the older adults in your community to unleash their voices in song.

Older Americans Month 2013 Community SportsCommunity-Wide Sports Day

The stronger and more energized we are in later life, the more we can do to unleash the power of age in our communities. Exercise helps older Americans stay in shape and improves the quality of life at all ages, and being active as a community promotes well-being for all and helps get people involved. Help unleash the power of age by coordinating a community-wide sports day.
