The Oxford Dictionary provides two definitions of “community” that sum up Assisted Living:
- A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
- A feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
The first is a given—Assisted Living residents, all of a certain age range, live together. The Summer 2012 issue of the CALA News & Views explores the second. How do we create that sense of fellowship that enriches the lives of residents, families, and associates? Expert authors examined how to manage diversity, build engagement, and welcome new opportunities to expand community. Residents and family members shared their perspectives on what makes their community a home. And CALA members showcased what they are doing to interact with and improve the communities in which they live.
The issue, “Building Community,” has been recognized as a Gold Winner in the category of association magazines by the MarCom Awards, a competition that recognizes outstanding achievement in quality and creativity by communication professionals.
The 2012 international awards competition recognizes outstanding creative achievement by marketing and communication professionals. There were over 6,000 entries from throughout the United States, Canada and several other countries in the 2012 competition.
